Akira Isogawa

One of Australia’s most celebrated designers, Akira Isogawa has achieved worldwide recognition for his exquisite contemporary designs. Born in Kyoto, Japan, Akira moved to Sydney in 1986 and has since become an icon of the Australian fashion industry. Akira’s garments echo Eastern influences and draw from vintage textiles, with richly embellished fabrics and traditional prints. The craftsmanship and romanticism of his designs has become legendary. Since 1998, Akira has shown collections in Paris and presents Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter collections to international buyers each year and currently his collection is available in US, UK, Italy and France as well as in middle east. In Australia, his work has been embraced by the Australian arts sector, including his exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. He also worked with the Australian Ballet, designing costume for Romeo and Juliet as well as for the Sydney Dance Company for a number of their production, including Salome. In 1999, he was named Designer of the Year and Womenswear Designer of the Year at the Australian Fashion Industry Awards. In 2005 he was honoured by Australia Post and his image appeared on an ‘Australian Legend’ postage stamp. In 2007 he was awarded the Australian Fashion Laureate Award for his contribution to the Australian Fashion Industry.
